Slopes over 30°

One app from the kitchen table to the summit and back

Everything below is in the app today. Scroll and the phone shows each one working.

Before you leave

Topo maps for wherever you climb

National topographic maps by country, free: IGN Spain and France, Swisstopo, Mapy.cz, CycleOSM, Waymarked Trails and more. Premium adds ten Mapbox vector styles, satellite included.

  • The 3D button adds terrain relief on top of any style
  • MTB, cycling and hiking trail networks, with difficulty ratings

Read the slope before you stand on it

Avalanche bulletins by micro-region, and every slope over 30° shaded on the map. Drag the slider to raise the threshold and watch what is left of your line.

  • Slope aspect, with a rose you tap to filter by orientation
  • Altitude bands, measured snow depth at stations, ski slopes
  • Each layer has its own opacity, and dims where it has no coverage

Know when the face gets the sun

Sun and shade simulated over the terrain for any day and any hour. Press play and see when the couloir comes out of the shade, or when the descent starts to soften.

The forecast along the whole line

Not the forecast for the town in the valley. Tap the profile header and get the weather for each part of the track, hour by hour or day by day, with sunrise and sunset.

  • Five map overlays: cloud and precipitation, temperature, wind, pressure, snow
  • A TV-style view with icons and temperatures over towns

Draw the route, on the trail or off it

Long-press to drop points and the route recalculates after each one. The magnet snaps it to paths and roads. Turn it off and you get straight lines, for the glacier, the scree or the ridge with no path.

  • Undo the last 10 actions, insert a point anywhere on the line
  • Round trip generator: one point, a length, and it builds the loop
  • Edit any saved track you own, imported ones too

Every metre of climb, before you climb it

Drag a finger across the elevation chart. A marker follows on the map and you get distance, altitude and gradient at that exact spot. Colour the track by steepness, surface or way type.

  • Climbs detected and ranked from category 4 to HC
  • Water, lodging and 13 more kinds of POI within 500 m of the route
  • Towns and mountain landmarks the route passes

Built for places with no signal

Frame a region, pick the detail level and choose which mountain layers go with it. You see the size before you download. A separate switch keeps all your tracks on the phone.

On the mountain

Record the whole day

Tap REC and put the phone away. It keeps recording in the background: time, distance, speed, elevation gain and loss, with a live chart and a battery monitor.

  • Backed up continuously. If the system kills the app, you recover the recording on the next launch
  • Set GPS accuracy and point interval, and see the battery cost per hour as you change them

Stay on the line when you can’t see it

Turn instructions with the remaining distance, and a warning tone when you drift more than about 150 m off the track. Voice announcements read your progress so the phone stays in the pocket.

  • Three follow modes: north up, course up, or turning with the phone
  • Battery saver: a black screen with only the next turn, in large type
  • Following resumes by itself after you pan the map

Warn the next party

Drop a waypoint where the route is closed, flooded, rough or just worth a photo. Alerts are shared, so you also see what others reported within 20 km and along your track.

  • 12 waypoint types, with a photo from the camera or gallery
  • Each one shows km along the track, altitude and date

See your partners on the map

Start a live session and everyone on the same track shares position, distance and altitude. They show up as named pucks on the map and as circles on the elevation profile.

  • Tap a name to fly to them
  • Premium feature

Climb against your last ascent

On any track recorded with timestamps, the ghost replays the original outing at its original speed. You see how far ahead or behind you are, in metres and in minutes.

Back home

Fly the route again in 3D

A cinematic fly-over of the track on satellite imagery and 3D terrain, with speed control and a progress slider. Good for the debrief, better for convincing next weekend’s partners.

Every track in its place

Open a GPX or GeoJSON from mail, the browser or any other app and it goes straight into your list. Group tracks into coloured collections and plot a whole collection at once.

  • Share a track with a 6-character code, or a whole collection with one code
  • Export as GPX or GeoJSON
  • Filter by created, recorded or downloaded, and by tag

Free and Premium

Free

The planner, recording, navigation, mountain layers and the free national topo maps. Up to 50 tracks, 5 collections and 20 waypoints, stored on your phone.

Premium

Mapbox vector maps and satellite, sharing tracks and collections with codes, live shared sessions, no quotas, and everything synced to the cloud.

Hit a quota and nothing is deleted. You just can’t create more until you upgrade. Change plan either way and your data moves with you.

Questions people ask

I downloaded a GPX from another app or website. How do I open it?

From the app where the file is, use Share or Open with and pick TrackViewer. Or open the track list and tap the import button to browse your files. Either way the app processes it, computes the elevation profile and takes you to the save dialog.

How do offline maps work?

In Settings, Offline, choose Download new area. Frame a region, name it, choose the maximum detail level and pick which mountain layers to include. The estimated size is shown before downloading. You can view, update or delete each area later.

What if the system kills the app while I’m recording?

The recording is backed up continuously. On the next launch the app offers to recover or discard the interrupted recording.

How much battery does recording use?

It depends on the GPS accuracy and the distance between points, and you control both in Settings, GPS. The estimated battery use per hour updates as you change them. While following a track, battery saver mode switches to a black screen with only the next turn.

Does the app warn me if I leave the track?

Yes. More than about 150 m from the track, plus the GPS accuracy margin, triggers a message and, with sound effects on, a warning tone, at most once every 30 seconds.

Do I need an account?

No. Accounts are anonymous by default until you decide to link an email.

What happens to my data when I change plan?

Content is stored in the cloud on Premium and on the device on the free plan. When you upgrade, local content is uploaded. If you downgrade, it is downloaded back to the device, keeping the most recent version of each item.

The full user guide lives inside the app, in Settings, under FAQs.
